Traditional Costumes In Haryana

Cultural Heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from Generation to Generation. People of Haryana reflect their culture through their different colourful costumes and ornaments. Women wear very colourful attires which make them more elegant and beautiful whereas men's costumes are very simple but graceful. The dress of the people consists of a dhoti, shirt, turban and a pair of shoe. A blanket or chaddar serves as wrapper. The turban has a different style for a Jat, an Ahir, a Rajput, a Bania or a Brahman. There is also difference in the dress of various communities particularly among women.

Men's Traditional Costumes

The traditional costumes of men of Haryana are as follows:

  • Pagri It is also known as 'Paagadi' " 'Pagdhar' and 'Saafi' in Haryanví language. It is less broad but exceptionally long fabric which is enfolded around head in Marwari style. Kajputi style Pagadi is known as 'Paag'. It is the sign of Pride for the people of Haryana.
  • However in recent times, only the older men are found wearing pagris.
  • Safa It is also a king of Pagri specially tied by soldiers in a district pattern.
  • Muretha It is a type of cap which is worn in Haryana by menfolk.
  • Guliband Muffler is known as 'Guilband' or 'Gulband' in Haryana. It is made of wool which is worn around neck. It is an important attire of winters.
  • Mirjai Mirjai is a modified form of flowing robe (known as jama) fastened on the right. The Mirjai is an under Jacket with long loose sleeves and open cuffs.
